Peplum Fever

PeplumTo celebrate the start of the year we’re discussing a trend that you will have seen A LOT of over Christmas and New Year. Drumroll please! ……. THE PEPLUM

No need to lie, we know you wore it at like every holiday party this past season, and so did we! It is feminine, it is bold, it is sexy and having been present in many SS13 runways across the globe, we are confident that it will be sprouting up again everywhere in just a few short months.

A little history lesson please. The PEPLUM originated in the 1940s when Cristóbal Balenciaga started to play with different volumes in his collections, creating new designs such as the Babydoll and the balloon dress.

The PEPLUM form was all over the runways of F/W 2011-2012 as designers used it to add a little volume to skirts and dresses. The trend is now creeping up the female physique where we’ve seen more and more of this trend from the waist up in tops, shirts and jackets.

The key to the PEPLUMis definite VOLUME, but the precise dimension is defined by each designer. We’ve seen more subtle size in the PEPLUMdesigns of Burberry

… and more dramatic dimensions in the collections of Juana Martín. This Spanish designer takes this trend to another level in her 3Seven.53N collection, experimenting with different positions and places on the body.

We have seen PEPLUM pieces that not only play with volume, but also with a variety of fabrics. The stiff pieces seen in the collections of Burberry gave off an air of sophistication, whereas the airy pieces seen in the collections of Isabel Marant gave off an air of romance, which is just right for spring 😉

It’s clear to see that the PEPLUM was a real hit at the most important international fashion weeks.

Just a few of the designers who included PEPLUM pieces in their recent collections include: Ángel Schlesser, Viktor & Rolf, Vera Wang, Simone Rocha,Elie Saab,Stella McCartney, Juana Martín, Viktor & Rolf, among many others.
