New Year Style Resolutions from the Streets of Edinburgh

Posted by: Rebecca Bosanquet

Who needs the runways of the international fashion weeks when you can observe the streets of one of Europe’s most stylish cities? We took to the streets of Edinburgh to bring you four essential looks fresh from the streets to inspire your 2013 wardrobe.

Look one: Keep cosy and classic with chic headwear

Hats are an essential wardrobe piece for 2013 and style diva duo Kay and Celine showed us exactly how to rock winter headwear glam. Kay (on the left) wore a H&M floppy hat and burgundy leggings from Urban Outfitters, adding a splash of colour with a Hermes scarf and a classic vintage furry jacket and leather side bag (a gift from her mum for ultimate vintage). Celine (on the right) stayed warm and sophisticated with a Zara leather jacket and Topshop burgundy beany hat and sweater.

These Edinburgh locals recommended hip Hannover Street for stylish hangouts like Bar Sober and 99 Hannover Street.  They also recommended checking out the vintage boutiques of Stockbridge for unique style finds.

Their look was all about combining burgundy and gold accessories, flawlessly coordinating nails with gold accessories and vintage pieces.

Celine rocking the burgundy

Kay quoted her style icon as Vivienne Westwood; the ultimate dame of eclectic British fashion. Their street style echoed the same sense of fun and imagination that we saw on Vivienne Westwood’s Red label catwalk for London Fashion Week S/S 2013. Her collection was all about mixing old and new, with retro references and plenty of hats just like our street style duo Kay and Celine.

Look two: Glam it up in burgundy

Burgundy pieces are a firm favourite on the streets right now. Kaitlin showed us how to look high end without spending a fortune in a Primark burgundy jacket and plimsolls from River Island, perfectly accessorised with jewellery from Edinburgh boutique Trinket.

Award winning Edinburgh boutique Trinket is stacked with quirky, one-off finds from Scottish jewellery designers such as Sarah Hutchison, Susan Kerr and Emma Doyle.

Kaitlin’s style icon is Rihanna who was also rocking the burgundy winter glamour in her Acne “Velocite” Burgundy Shearling Jacket .

After a hard day scouring the boutiques of Edinburgh Kaitlin recommended checking out the delights of Bibi’s Cake Boutique where the cupcakes are so beautifully made you almost won’t want to get your teeth into them.

Look three: Invest in statement print pieces

Edinburgh student Jenny showed us how to rock the double print in Urban Outfitter printed leggings and leopard fur coat from Armstrong & sons vintage boutique. A leopard fur coat is the ideal investment to keep you looking ultra-chic throughout Winter.

Jenny’s accessories were effortless and timeless as she mixed vintage rings and bag and modern headphones.  Her all-time favourite style icon is Kate Moss, who has also opted for a statement leopard coat this winter to keep her looking breath-taking throughout the cold months.

To get retro delights like Jenny’s she recommended checking out the boutiques of Broughton Street and Edinburgh favourite Armstrong & sons boutique which is like a treasure trove for one-off vintage finds.

Look four: High waist wonders

For a look that packs a punch go for the high waist skirt. Sterling native Tigue showed us how much this look means business in her red Urban Outfitters skirt, Mini Tonka shoes and Urban Eagle shoulder bag. The key is to keep the waist visible like Tigue to keep the look feminine and elegant.

The high waist trend was all over the runways of SS13 fashion weeks; (left to right) Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Burberry Prorsum, Yigal Azrouel.

Last but not least…these fine Highland gentlemen on Princess Street took iconic Scottish style to the next level. Now what more do you need for 2013 style inspiration?
